Based on the 1962 Country Gentleman as used by George Harrison, the 6122-1962 incorporates all the best features for a truly accurate representation. The SP models were made a few years ago in a separate factory to offer Beatle fans (as well as vintage guitar nuts) a more accurate recreation of a vintage Gretsch. They really went for the details here. The hollow body is made of laminated maple and is sealed with no F holes for better feedback resistance. The 3 Pice maple neck features a 24.6 inch scale bound ebony fingerboard with delicate thumb print inlays. This particular example even has some nice figure to the neck. Dual High Sensitive Filtertron pickups are hooked to the unique Gretsch tone switch for tons of tones. A floating bar bridge offers sustain while the V cut Bigsby vibrato dishes out retro effects. Grover Imperial tuners add a fancy art deco touch. Just like the originals, this one features dual flip up mutes and a back pad. The finish is a deep brown and is set off by multiple bindings and gold hardware. If you want a Gretsch just like George played, this one is dang close! As an added bonus, this guitar was once owned by the great Wilson Pickett! Unfortunately, no documentation comes with it but I bought it from a store near his home in Virginia and they claimed he bought it and traded it back in. How cool is that?!?
Like most modern Gretsch guitars, this one feels and sounds great. I’ve had a ton of older Gents and have had to contend with the lousy neck sets, bad binding and terrible playability that some 60s Gretsches have. The newer ones are miles and away better in terms of playability and fit and finish. Top notch electronics too. Everything works as it should. This is a nice clean guitar too showing only minor playwear and pick scratches and some gold fade. Very nice. Comes in original hardshell case.
Gretsch guitars have had a resurgence in popularity in recent years. For good reason. They are well made and capture the look and vibe of the originals without the huge vintage price tag. A new 6122-1962 will cost you $2350.00 at the online stores. Here’s a nice used one for a lot less! BUY IT NOW and own a great Gretsch!
