This beautifully detailed model is of the legendary airship, the Graf Zeppelin, LZ-127. The Graf Zeppelin was named for Count Ferdinand Zeppelin ("Graf" is German for "Count"), the officer and engineer who founded the Zeppelin Airship Company to develop rigid lighter-than-air aircraft for Germany.
Despite the intricacy of this model, it is very easy to assemble. Pieces are photo-etched onto sheets of stainless steel, and can be trimmed with sharp cutters or hobby knife's. All you need to finish the kit are the before-mentioned cutters, tweezers (used to bend pieces) and some super-glue. The finished model is a little over 9" long.
The first flight of the LZ127 was on September 28, 1928. It was 776 feet long, had a volume of some 3.7 million cubic feet, and was the worlds largest airship at the time. It was powered by five Maybach 550hp engines, and could carry a payload of about 66 tons.
The Graf Zeppelin was retired one month after the Hindenberg disaster in 1937, and was moved to a museum. In 1940 Hermann Goring ordered it dismantled and the aluminum scrapped for the German war effort.
