Description:
October 1950: The German People is very busy to rebuild the destroyed cities and industry. Trucks are an essential part of this enormous job. After the L 4500 / L 5000 series - a war construction that was already started again in late 1945 - the L 6600 was the first new truck series that Daimler-Benz launched in October 1950. In short time it became the standard truck in the heavy duty truck class because it was the right offer at the right time. But the L 6600 was not completely new. The rounded cabin had its origins in the late thirties and the 8,3 litre in-line-six diesel engine named OM 315 had 145 hp.The maximum speed was 70 km/h. The L 6600 - named so because of its load capacity of 6600 kg - could be used for the most different tasks. Early Daimler-Benz advertising talked about a fast heavy duty truck with exceptional pulling power and endurance, a platform truck for short and long distance transport. Many hauliers were convinced by its smooth engine and its in those times easy driving. Therefore you may not wonder that this truck series became the most popular heavy truck in the fifties with about 26000 pieces built. The L 6600 did its bit to the reputation of Mercedes-Benz trucks and helped Daimler-Benz to become the European leading truck manufacturer.
