What is a Clarity Enhanced Diamond?

Clarity enhanced diamonds are real, naturally mined diamonds. Almost all natural diamonds have internal imperfections or inclusions, graded in terms of the clarity of the diamond from IF (internally flawless) to I3 (visibly included). State-of-the-art technology allows for diamond imperfections to be reduced by filling internal inclusions with transparent material, which has optical and refractive characteristics that closely resemble those of a natural diamond. The amount of material used is minute and does not increase the diamond's weight.


During the clarity enhancement process we insert a microscopic amount of material into the part of the diamond that contains a feather. This material has the same optical properties as the diamond itself. When light travels from one medium to another, it either changes its course or reflects in a different direction. When light attempts to pass through a non-enhanced diamond that has a feather, the light hits the feather and reflects off in any number of directions. That is why we see the feather, and the diamond doesn't appear to be clean. With a CE diamond, the light passes through the natural feather because the material used for the enhancement has the same optical characteristics as the diamond. The beam of light "thinks" it's still traveling through the same material (diamond) and continues its original course.


There are two types of clarity enhancement - one using bromide and the other using a silicone based material. The former is the lower quality treatment and can discolor or fade over time - our stones are only enhanced using the higher quality treatment which can last a lifetime so long as it isn't exposed to extreme heat (over 1500 degrees) or corrosive chemicals. If, however, anything ever happens to the treatment of the diamond, you may return it to us and we will have the stone re-treated and as good as new.
