Despised Icon have ties to the Quebec technical death metal scene, though they're not truly part of it. Their music has some intricate parts, but it's primarily a display of muscle-headed deathcore brutality. Their album, DAY OF MOURNING, was produced by the band's former guitarist, Yannic St-Amand, though, and he's worked with acts like Ion Dissonance, Neuraxis, and Beneath the Massacre, so he knows how to get an ultra-clean tech-death sound. Drummer Alex Pelletier sounds like a machine, whipping through ultra-complex fills and brutal, endurance-testing blastbeats with equal energy, and St-Amand gives him a full, reverby sound rather than the typewriter/practice-pad clicking still too common in extreme metal. Pelletier, in fact, is the primary reason to listen to this album, as the riffs--even when they shift briefly, tantalizingly, into dissonance--are mostly of an extremely knuckle-headed-friendly sort, downtuned and grinding like a bulldozer trying to work its way out of a golf course sand trap. Some songs, like "Eulogy," feature decent soloing, but for the most part, the guitars are there to provide a foundation for the two lead vocalists to shout and scream over. They come across like a Run-D.M.C.-style partnership, one going low and the other somewhat higher, with the entire band joining in for gang shouts at times. Within the extremely limited context of deathcore, this is a pretty good album, but "thick-necked dudes riffing and bellowing" is a genre that's offering limited rewards in 2009, so DAY OF MOURNING is best appreciated as a showcase for Alex Pelletier; it would be nice if he could find a side band more worthy of his talents.

One review reads 'Canadian Deathcore massive Despised Icon are back with their new album Day Of Mourning, the follow up to 2007’s The Ills Of Modern Man, an album that helped to further push the deathcore sound into the metal limelight, with the album selling more than 2,000 copies in its first week. Two years in the making and a couple of line-up changes later, how is this album going to hit you?

Well, quoting bassist Max Lavelle in a rather tongue-in-cheek interview: “Pick up our new record; you are probably going to sh--t your pants.” Hmmn, well you’re probably not going to self-defecate over this one, but for those who have yet to hear the band, the speedy rythyms and growling low end will probably loosen your bowels if listened to at a high volume. The album was tracked with longtime producer (and former guitar player) Yannick St-Amand, mixed by producer Andreas Magnusson (Haste The Day, Born of Osiris) and mastered by Alan Douches (Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Nile). The sound of album hasn’t changed a great deal though, on this one, the guitars are a bit more savage sounding in their attack.

Day Of Mourning isn’t that much more intense than their last album. It also doesn’t have the overall crowd-surging tracks and memorable riffs such as on In The Arms Of Perdition or Furtive Monologue, although strangely they have placed a couple of decent tracks near the beginning. The couple of tracks that have been released so far are MVP and Day Of Mourning.

MVP is one of the better songs. High-pitched chords are stabbed out while Pelletier’s bass pedals rumble along with the chunky low end of Lavelle, which then leads on to a battering of tremolo picking and rapid drumming. Suspension-filled woodwind squeals take us to a possible entry for the slowest/sparest breakdown EVER contest, with more flapping drums and bass. Eulogy has to be another stand out track, with possibly the fastest drumming Pelletier has put down on tape. It is immense. The latter part of the album is more death-influenced and their hardcore side gets toned down a little, for example on the tracks Made Of Glass and Diva Of Digust where the latter consists of more rapid hammer on/pulls offs than straight grinding out.

Overall, it is the same old Despised Icon sound but with some added gusto so, current fans, grab your crotch and monkey dance to your heart’s content with this one.
