Album notes
Personnel: Tracy Bonham (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, violin, Fender Rhodes piano, pump organ, Wurlitzer organ, vibraphone, claves); Michael Ward (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Greg Collins (acoustic guitar, slide guitar, clarinet, chamberlin, bass instrument); David Levita (electric guitar, electric 12-string guitar, slide guitar, baritone guitar, bass instrument); Sebastian Steinberg (electric guitar, double bass); Matt Beck (electric guitar); Mitchell Froom (piano, Hammond b-3 organ, vibraphone); Dan Rothchild, Davey Faragher (bass instrument); Joey Waronker, Butch (drums, percussion); Ryan MacMillan (drums). Recording information: Sage & Sound Studio, Hollywood, California; Henson Studios, Hollywood, California (2005). On the basis of her angst-filled 1996 hit "Mother Mother," Tracy Bonham was awkwardly shoehorned into the "angry young woman" camp by a media machine eager for another Alanis Morissette. But the singer/songwriter and classically trained multi-instrumentalist has always been more talented and subtle than the association would suggest. Here, Bonham has created her most emotionally immediate album, without sacrificing any of her characteristic sophistication. These 12 wistful meditations on love and life showcase Bonham's throaty, distinctive voice and her ear for interesting musical juxtapositions. Throughout the record, sunny 1960s-influenced pop melodies belie wistful and self-searching lyrics about abandonment and unrequited love. "Take Your Love Out on Me" and "I Was Born Without You" are dead-serious laments wrapped in playful, ersatz-Middle Eastern forms, and the world-weary, cabaret-like verses of "And the World Has the Nerve to Keep Turning" culminate in a stirring, gospel-tinged chorus. When she sticks to more straightforward song structures, Bonham creates moments of powerful beauty, as on the indelible melody of "All Thumbs" and the soulful, minor-key ballad, "Wilting Flower."
