Auf der Bildseite der Münze ist es dem Künstler durch die Teilung der Fläche in drei Segmente gelungen, die inhaltliche Breite des Themas "Luftfahrt" darzustellen. Der Mittelteil mit einem Flugzeug ist eindrucksvolles Zentrum der Münze. Die Frontalansicht eines modernen Flugzeugs beim Anflug auf die Landebahn zeigt die Dynamik des Fliegens. In beiden Seitenstreifen wird in zurückhaltender, fast ornamentaler Gestaltung die Vielfalt von Luft- und Raumfahrt deutlich. Der Spannungsbogen reicht hier von den Fluggeräten Otto Lilienthals bis hin zur Internationalen Raumstation ISS.

Die Wertseite zeigt einen Adler, den Schriftzug "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND", die zwölf Europa-Sterne, die Wertziffer mit der Euro-Bezeichnung sowie die Jahreszahl 2009 und das Münzzeichen "D" des Bayerischen Hauptmünzamtes, München.

Der glatte Münzrand enthält in vertiefter Prägung die Inschrift:
