(3) THE TEXAN'S WAGER ~ JOVE HISTORICAL ROMANCE PAPERBACK PUBLISHED IN 2002.
Two emotionally scarred people find love in this fast-paced Western from Thomas (To Wed in Texas, etc.). When Bailee Moore and her two female companions are voted off a wagon train, they reluctantly make their way to Texas, where they are accosted by a wild, smelly man set on stealing their wagon. The three women bash the brute over the head and promptly turn themselves in to the nearest sheriff, convinced they've committed murder. Instead of sending them away to be hanged, however, Cedar Point's wily sheriff devises a marriage lottery, in which the women are raffled off and married to men willing to pay their prison fines. Carter McKoy, a silent recluse with a tragic past, draws Bailee's name, and though she deplores her lot, she quickly warms to him. The first half of the novel ambles leisurely along as Bailee and Carter come to know one another, but the pace picks up abruptly when Bailee learns the man she allegedly killed is alive and eager for revenge.

Complicating the situation, Nell has filled her house with social outcasts, and the resultant chaos means that Jacob's courtship must proceed under public scrutiny.
(5) A TEXAN'S LUCK ~ JOVE HISTORICAL ROMANCE PAPERBACK PUBLISHED IN 2004.
While Thomas recently made a splash with two contemporary novels, The Widows of Wichita County and Finding Mary Blaine, it's her nearly 20 historical romances, set in her native state of Texas, that have earned her two RITA awards. This psychologically, as well as physically, action-packed tale demonstrates why. Third in her Wife Lottery series (after The Texan's Wager and When a Texan Gambles), it follows the fortunes of 15-year-old orphan Lacy Larson, youngest of a gutsy trio of pioneer women auctioned off to avoid jail after killing Zeb Whittaker, an avaricious buffalo hunter who'd attacked them. For mysterious reasons, Walker Larson, Lacy's married-by-proxy army captain hubby, doesn't want a wife, much less one his father has purchased for him. But when Zeb Whittaker turns up alive five years later, desiring revenge, the reluctant absentee groom is assigned to protect Lacy.

The young captive was "rescued" from the wild by civilized men, and her handler offers to let Wes have her for a fee. Disgusted and outraged, Wes knocks the man out and offers the woman a chance at freedom.
