Over 11 decades, through numerous name changes at the institution currently known as Arizona STate University, those athletes toiled in the pursuit of excellence. Their accumulated sweat surely would send the nearby Salt River overflowing its banks.

It all began on a windy February day in 1891 on a primitive baseball diamond a few miles east of campus. A makeshift team from Tempe Normal took on a team from Stringtown, a Mormon settlement that grew into Alma and later Mesa, in the first recorded athletic event in the school's history.

Stringtown won, 18-9, even though it only had six men on its team. But there would be better days ahead for the little school that grew over the years into one of the largest educational institutions in the country and became one of the nation's elite athletic powers.
