I also use this chart, the way I do it is simple. I studied the Hiragana & Katakana well enough to read and write them on the fly. Then I study and decipher each Kanji at the time. For me Kanji are nothing but shortcuts.

Every time I learn one Kanji, I mark it on the chart. Plain and simple plus I can see my own progress.
