St. Bridget's Cross

Bridget or "Brigid" is an elusive figure in the medieval Irish tradition.  Regarded as one of the three great Patron Saints of Ireland, her feast-day February 1st, is one of the great Irish festival days.

 

The St. Bridget's Cross or "Cross Bhride" is associated with the celebration of Brigid's feast day.  Made from rushes, it was fashioned on the eve of her feat-day and placed inside the house, over the door as a form of protection and blessing.
