The original photograph was taken outside Nome, Alaska in 1917. The taller lead dog is Scotty and the other lead dog is Russky. Both dogs were original imports from Siberia and used in Seppala's 8th, 9th, and 10th All Alaska Sweepstake wins.
Sled Dog Image Archives is committed to providing their customers with only the highest quality vintage reproductions available today. Hours, and sometimes days of artistry go into each and every digital restoration and enhancement. Many of the original photographs used to create these images can only be found in museums and private collections. It is exciting to announce that exceptional reproductions of many wonderful original photographs are now available through Sled Dog Image Archives.
This vintage reproduction is printed on 11" x 14" superior quality heavy (230gsm) professional photographic matte paper so that it can be placed directly into any conventional 11" x 14" frame. Due to the irregular size of the original photograph, the image size of this reproduction is 6.3" x 10.5" with a 1/4" sepia border and a 1 1/2" minimum white border around the image, thereby eliminating the need for expensive matting and framing. This reproduction displays like a fine museum piece and would look wonderful in your home, office, or make a great gift for any occasion.
The original photograph was digitally restored by removing all damage resulting from the ravages of time such as cracks, tears, stains, yellowing, fading, blemishes from mold, etc. Certain aspects of the original photograph were then enhanced to give this reproduction a rich and clear quality that did not exist in the original picture due to the limitations of the photographic process and equipment in the early 20th century. The quality of this reproduction exceeds that of the original image in clarity, tonal range, and richness.
This 11" x 14" photograph is packaged in an acid free large clear envelope and shipped flat in a protective photo mailer. **The All Alaska Sweepstakes started in 1908 by The Nome Kennel Club and became an annual dog sled race through 1917. The route ran from Nome to Candle Creek and back for a total distance of four hundred and forty miles. This particular route was chosen by the Nome Kennel Club, the world's oldest dog mushing organization, because it required the teams to travel over many different kinds of trails. The driver and his/her dogs traveled along the coast, up and down rivers, over large areas of tundra, through stretches of timber, from ocean to ocean, and then returned. The purpose of choosing this route was to develop the fastest all-around dogs capable of overcoming all kinds of conditions.
