     The monetary system of an area is an index to its economic activities.  Hence
for understanding properly the economic history of a given region and period 
one must know the relevant media of exchange.  This is particularly true about
north India of the early or proto-mediaeval age (c. A.D. 750-1200), the economic
history of which has been often reconstructed on various assumptions, including
the absence of inter-regional trade and media of exchange (during at least a part
of this period).  The present monograph is an in-depth study of the veracity of
the second assumption.  It has demonstrated the historicity of a complex system
of currency in the zone and period and has thereby exploded one of the bases
of the preconceived notions about the economic developments in post-Gupta 
north India.  Divided into two chapters  (I.  Coins of Early Mediaeval North India-
A study in their Characteristics; and II.  Trade and Money), this monograph is an
outstanding contribution to the history of India's monetary system.
