You're certain to recognize the check pattern on Burberry clothing. It is one of the most duplicated trademarks and even has Royal Warrants issued by HM Queen Elizabeth and HRH The Prince of Wales.

Burberry has a long history. It was founded in the mid 1850s by a man named Thomas Burberry The business focused on outdoors attire and in 1888 received a patent for gabardine, which was a fabric made from yarn that is made waterproof before it is used. The resulting fabric is water-resistant but it is still soft and comfortable. This led to the company getting a commission from the War Office to come up with uniforms for British officers. They also gained notoriety when they created the clothing for the first person to go to the South Pole as well as Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctica expedition.

It was the Burberry trenchcoat which really led to the company’s popularity. They had originally designed the coat during World War I by changing some of their original uniform designs to fit the type of warfare that the military was engaged in. The coat became popular outside of the military, especially when it was shown in Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The check pattern that Burberry is so famous for actually has a name, the “Nova.” It is made up of four colors; red, black, camel and white. First seen in trench coats in the 1920s, it wasn’t until the late 1960s when it was used on its own. You can now get many products such as scarves, handbags and umbrellas with the Nova pattern.

The trench coat is a descendant of the heavy serge coats worn by British and French soldiers in World War I . The trench coat was created by Thomas Burberry , the inventor of gabardine fabric, who submitted a design for an army officer's raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office in 1901. Burberry's raincoat subsequently became part of the service uniform of British officers. During World War I , the design was modified to include shoulder straps and D-rings. This latter material that looks like leather was dubbed "trench coat" by the soldiers in the trenches. Many veterans returning to civilian life kept their coats that became fashionable for both men and women.

A typical trench coat is a ten-buttoned, double-breasted long coat made with tan, khaki, beige, or black fabric. Trench coats often have cuff straps on the raglan sleeves , shoulder straps (originally used to hold gloves and folding service caps, such as the Glengarry bonnet ), and a belt that may also have two small brass D-rings as a salute to its military heritage. The rings were used to secure grenades, or sidearms (or swords in World War I ).
