Description :
   The coinage of the Indian sub-continent provides an interminable source of
interest and research.  Literally hundreds of dynasties, empires and states that,
from about B.C. 600, arose and subsequently declined within its boundaries,
provide the present day numismatist with a wealth of material on which to work
on investigative lines.
     Serious research and cataloguing began only in the last century and has,
since then, slowly gathered momentum.  There is, however, a vast amount of
work  that remains to be done and the establishment and growth of the Indian
Institute of Research in Numismatic Studies at Nasik, the continuing activities
of the Numismatic Society of India and the Oriental Numismatic Society and the
interest engendered by the many smaller numismatic societies that flourish in
India should ensure that valuable research will continue and progress along
sound lines.
     A contribution to this research is contained in this volume on the coinage
of the Marathas, whose impact on the history of India was of considerable
importance although their influence prevailed, for just  something over 150 years
a very brief period in the past two-and-half millennia.  The Maratha coinage,
therefore, deserves as much treatment as that of other dynasties and polities,
some of which existed for an equally brief period and whose role in the history
of the sub-continent was negligible but whose coinage has been fully 
investigated.
     The coinage of the Marathas has, in the past, been a rather neglected subject.
No list of their mints or catalogue of their coins has ever been attempted.  In fact,
very little is known of the development of their coinage.  The identification of some
of the Maratha issues has often been the subject of doubt, controversy or a 
matter of pure guesswork.  It is hoped that this volume will go some way towards
putting on record the various mints and the coins issued of the Marathas and will
be of assistance to coin collectors in India and elsewhere in attributing and 
assessing such specimens that happen to come their way.  Hopefully, it will
prompt further interest and investigation into this rather complex coinage.
