RARE MASTERWORK FIGURINE IN CLASSIC S-CURVE SENSUAL POSE TORSO WITHOUT HEAD
In
India, since the most ancient times, woman has been the object of
special devotion. Indus valley figurines, fertility deities, and the
goddess figures standing guard at the entrances to Gupta holy palaces
are all illustrative of the fact that the female image- right up to the
medieval period - was an eternal theme for Buddhist or Brahmanic
sculptors......
THIS
IS AN EXTREMELY RARE ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIND OF the11th century AD FEATURING A HAND SCULPTED CARVING OF A BEAUTIFUL INDIAN LADY'S TORSO FROM KUJARAHO , MADYA PRADESH
THIS
STUNNING WORK OF ART IS A MUSEUM QUALITY SPECIMEN THAT IS TRUE
ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURE COVERED IN A WONDERFUL PATINA OVER THE CENTURIES THAT EXUDES A SPIRITUAL PRESENCE THAT IS TRULY MESMERIZING
The traditional representation of female sensuality - as seen here - was maintained down the centuries. Here we see the voluptuous figure of the Indian woman commonly known as a bust lady due to their renowned shapely figures. She is depicted here endowed with an ample bossom, and both the position of her head - slightly tilted to the right - and the twist of her her bust are perhaps indicative of the original "tribangha" or "triple -flexion posture", characteristic of Indian sculpture. The earrings, her long pearl necklace and finally her gaze as she looks into a mirror are tokens of the abiding passion of Indian women for jewelery and finery that go hand in hand with their own renowned beauty.
A
close look at this sculpture will reveal an exquisitely beautiful
carving of the Indian woman by an artist whose hand exuded a delicate and
spiritual touch. This appealing sculpture with its naturalistically treated body, curvaceous forms , and purity and grace was destined to join the countless minor goddess figures such as "devatas" who charmed the gods by their alluring appearances, and female tree spirits or "shalabhanjika" symbilizing fertility who commonly embellished the walls of Indian shrines.
Time has taken its toll on this magnificent work of art with a few minor chips and uneven coat of dirt over the surface of this magnificent statue adding so much charm and character to this rare period piece.
This
one of a kind masterwork demands its respect and due and hence I have
set a reserve price albeit a reasonable one for this museum quality
treasure in the art of the Mathura

ABOUT RAJASTAHNI AND KHUJARAO ART IN INDIA DURING THE MEDIEVIALPERIOD
The production of Northern Indian art in the medieval period (9th-14th
centuries) was rich and varied. An extraordinarily forceful and exquisite
Brahmanic art blossomed in the great northern provinces - for instance in
Rajasthan, or in Western Madhya Pradesh at Khajuraho-which witnessed the
emergence of distinct architectural and sculptural styles. In most of these
regions, the often-grandiose architecture was always lavishly decorated.
