Please note that actual sizes are typically ½ inch less on the height and width and the depth is an actual ¾”.  This is common and typical of most air filters so that they properly fit into your unit. For example, a 20x25x1 filter will actually measure 19.5x24.5x.75

Sound good so far?  Now we can get to the GOOD STUFF!  I’m about to let you in on all the little details that determine the quality of a home air filter.  Why do some brands and types make outrageous claims? What do all these percentages and MERV ratings mean?  Why is there so much price difference when you compare filters in the store or on ebay? I’ve got the answers to all those questions and more right here……

·        The filters I offer in this auction utilize a MERV 11 rated filter media.  This is the optimum rating for excellence in filtration when being used in a residential application.  In a nutshell, the higher the MERV rating, the better the filter.  Most home improvement warehouses and discount stores offer filters that have ratings from MERV 1 to MERV 11.  The lower MERV rated filters aren’t as good at capturing dust and dirt particles as the higher MERV rated filters.    Simplified, MERV ratings are determined by the “worst case” performance of a filter after 6 stages of dust loading. The particle sizes introduced to the filter during a MERV test range from 0.3 microns to 10 microns in size.  By testing on such a wide range of sizes, this assures the filters performance over its lifetime.  To put these particle sizes into perspective, a human hair is typically around 100 microns in diameter!  Always look for a filter’s MERV rating when filter shopping and comparing.  If a filter does not carry a MERV rating it is probably because it simply can not provide acceptable performance when subjected to the testing standards.  Some filter salespeople will try to trick you with a very high “ARRESTANCE VALUE” of their filter…don’t fall for that trick!  Arrestance is simply a measure of how much dust has been removed by a filter, by total weight.  The test is very misleading because it reveals how well a filter will remove only large and heavy particles. It does nothing to help you determine how well the filter captures the smaller particles that cause lung irritation.  Thus, just because you see a filter that advertises 99% arrestance, it doesn’t tell you anything about how well it captures small particles.  This is a trick commonly used by someone trying to sell you a filter that doesn’t carry a MERV rating like an electrostatic washable filter, or any washable filter for that matter!
