With 652 (of 653) Vellum Leaves (1,304 manuscript pages), 130mm. by 82mm., lacking only a single leaf after fol.321, else Totally Complete! Collation: i-xiii24, xiv23 [of 24], xv-xxi24, xxii22, xxiii-xxvii24 + 7 leaves at end, with a few traces of alphabetical leaf signatures, modern pencil foliation (followed here) in inner lower margins omits leaves after fols.340 and 367 and so reaches ‘650’ by the end, double column, 48-49 lines, ruled in plummet, written-space 90mm. by 56mm., written in dark brown ink in an extremely small gothic bookhand, some headings in red, capitals touched in red, versal initials in Psalms and the Interpretations alternately red and blue, chapter numbers and running-titles in alternate red and blue letters with some flourishing, 2-line chapter initials throughout in red or blue with contrasting penwork extending far into the margins, approximately 142 large decorated initials painted in full colors in designs of leaves and plant-stems and often including dragons, birds, faces of lions, human heads, etc., These Strange Creatures were called "Grotesques." Marginal corrections in decorative cartouches, a Gospel concordance added on last pages, a few other medieval notes including Psalm numbers, oval red ownership stamps at ends and on fols.88m 125r, 247r, 263r, etc., extremities of some decoration and marginal notes slightly cropped (especially in the upper margin), some thumbing and marginal defects (especially at ends), a few tears and stains, generally sound, nineteenth-century English blind-stamped brown morocco, title gilt, gilt edges, vellum endleaves, Bound by the World Famous 19th century Binder F[rancis] Bedford (signed inside upper cover)
