HorseTail, Pygmy Bamboo, Scouring Rush Equisetum hyemale 3'-4' Tall, Horsetail is a type of spreading reed-like rush left ove r from the prehistoric
ages. Paleozoic Era 360-250 million years ago.Stems are cylindrical, hollow, jointed
and have a narrow black band at the joints. No flowers are produced, instead the
tip of the stems form a Cone-Shaped Strobilus that contain spores that are like
dust in the wind.
There are many species of this Horsetail, we grow 3 of them. They prefer wet
soggy areas and even when grown in pots and submerged in a pond with 1-3" of
water over the base of the plant, but I've even have seen it grow in a rock garden
that is sitting inside a "Old Wooden Wagon" sitting in Full Sun and very dry.
Culture
Light: Prefers Full Sun but will also grow in 60% Shade. Hardiness: USDA Zones 3 - 11.
Growing Conditions: Will tolerate very moist to wet soils, but can become invasive
unless confined to a container.
Propagation: Horstail rush spreads by shallow rhizomes (underground stems) and is easily propagated by dividing the clumps, and planting the Divisions.
Useage: Bog gardens, Marginal Plantings especially great for a 'Bio-Logical Filtering
system' due to the fact that the root system is very fine and compact to help remove
the impurities from flowing water.
Horestail was in great demand during the Previous Decades as a substitute for
Scouring Powder and Polishing Fine woodwork and Metal Items. Its still used today
in some parts of the world just for that.
