15 Vintage 1950's Blue & White Akro Agates L@@K!

I attended an outstanding estate sale this year.  Generally I am able to find one or two items I can’t seem to leave behind, at just about every sale I attend.  That is because I have a love and appreciation of craftsmanship and design and vintage items are not only quality they were meant to last a lifetime.  All too often I see these great vintage pieces that have served their owners, but have fallen on hard times and show their age.  But once in awhile I will see quality and craftsmanship and design paired with an owner who took great care of the item, so much so that it looks as if it had just been purchased that day!  You can’t look at items from stores today and see that dedication to making a really fine piece of clothing; regrettably we live in a time of planned obsolescence where things are designed to wear out so we will buy another.  Today to get quality you will have to pay hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars for designer items.

But this estate sale at this house was the pot at the end of the rainbow.  Why?  Well the person whose possessions we were seeing was an academic and a prolific collector, who had an eye for quality and was a world traveler.  She attended the University of Berkeley in California during the 1940’s; at a time when higher education for women was unheard of and there she studied Latin and obtained a teaching credential.  As young bride during the war years she traveled with her husband a war era photographer throughout Europe and Asia.  She lived an amazing life and what touched me the most, I think was that she was also a prolific embroiderer. I loved seeing her immaculate, well executed and pristine embroidered items.  All of her linens were embroidered with her initial or that of her married name.  She took great care of her home and family and after a long and remarkable life she passed away, just months after her 104 year old mother passed.  The home was filled to the brim with their combined possessions.  It was a veritable museum of collectibles that spanned over a hundred years -- all laid out and waiting for new owners.

Doug nearly had to literally pull me out of the house. From PERFECT 1950’s sweaters bought on a trip to Hong Kong, to great vintage bar-ware, linens (remember when linen meant LINEN), circa l960’s children’s toys, books, jewelry; it was all there and in mint or near mint condition.  I was awe struck, seriously. If you like what you see in this listing, please check back because we will be listing our best finds throughout the coming weeks, putting some things in our store and saving others like these marbles.

I will be offering marbles for auction over the next few months. I believe they are Akro Marbles (?).

I do not know much about marbles so I have separated them by color. Please email any questions you might have before you bid! This particular lot consists of 15 vintage blue and white marbles.
