The Rideau Canal was first proposed in 1816 to connect Ottawa (Bytown) to Kingston, Ontario. The Americans had given the Canadians a scare during the War of 1812. The canal provided an alternate shipping supply route. What began as a military idea later evolved into an industrial phase and later into a recreational phase. Colonel John By supervised the 126 mile project. These 154 (bilingual French and English) pages commemorate the Canal's 150'th anniversary. Many views of the Canal are given in b/w images as are materials requisition forms, lockmasters journals, and correspondence between principals. Each illustration or `graphic' has explanatory notes.
