Like anything else, the finest quality can only truly be
achieved when made from the finest materials. The
quality of the cotton depends on the length of the
fibers, known as staples. The longer the staple - the
better the cotton. The cotton is then carded to remove
dirt and short fibers. However a process called
combing is far more meticulous and will remove up to
15% of the fibers. This combing process will leave
only the longest staples, ready for spinning and
weaving into the strongest and finest fabric. The
result is a fabric which is softer and more sumptuous
than any other.

One hundred percent cotton is best. Today's all-cotton
sheets look a lot better than the cotton sheets of the
1950s. They're less likely to shrink and don't wrinkle
as much, But don't write off cotton blends. "You can
have a polyester fiber that feels like butter. It
really is the way something is processed and
finished."
