MARTIN LUTHER ON THE 23rd PSALM: In his thoughts on the 23rd Psalm ("The Lord is my Shepherd..."), Luther uses King David's great song as a commentary against what he considered a major evil of the Roman Catholic Church: "From these words we can also see clearly how shamefully we have been led astray under the papacy. It did not depict Christ in so friendly a fashion as did the dear Prophets, Apostles, and Christ Himself, but portrayed Him so horribly that we were more afraid of Him than of Moses . . . If that is not darkness, then I do not know what darkness is." Also in his commentary on the 23rd Psalm Luther says that the pronoun "my" is the most precious word in the Bible. "The Lord is my shepherd..."
THE 23rd PSALM: (King James Version)
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
