This leaf comes from the works of William Tyndale, translator of the first Bible to be printed into English. Tyndale an English scholar and theologian is the first person to take advantage of Gutenberg’s movable-type press for the purpose of printing the scriptures in the English language. In 1524, Tyndale left England for Germany because the English church strongly opposed putting the Bible into the hands of the laity. In 1535 Tyndale was arrested, jailed by the authority of King Henry VIII, he was tried for heresy and treason, then strangled and burnt at the stake in the castle's courtyard. Tyndale’s last words were “Oh Lord, Open the Kings of England’s eyes”.
