1568 Geneva "Breeches" Bible Leaf/RR/HANNAH W/SAMUEL!

.This is a scarce offering, a Bible leaf from the Second Quarto Geneva "Breeches" Bible printed by John Crispin in 1568 (see description below). This has the unique story of HANNAH AS SHE MADE A VOW TO GOD FOR A CHILD AND GOD HONORED HER REQUEST! It is Ruled in Red, this was done for the well to do in that day. There were only a few editions actually printed in Geneva where they fled from the persecution. It measures about 5 1/2" X 8", is in good condition with minor soiling. It is referred to as the 'Breeches' Bible for its translation of Genesis iii: 7 "and they sewed themselves breeches'. Also has been known as the "Pilgrims" Bible as it was so popular among them. The Geneva Bible was the Bible first brought to America on the Mayflower (as I understand it), and the first version to add numbered verses to each chapter. It was the favorite Bible of the Pilgrims and the Puritans (minus the apocrypha-at least for most), and is the version quoted thousands of times in William Shakespeare's plays. Due to violent oppression of Protestants in England Myles Coverdale, John Foxe, and other Church leaders fled to Geneva, Switzerland in the reign of the Roman Catholic Queen Mary, who was often referred to as 'bloody' Queen Mary, is so named for the place of both its translation and of its first publication. There, with the support of John Calvin and John Knox, they produced an English "Study Bible" (with extensive marginal notes and study aids) in 1560 so accurate and popular among Christians that it continued to be the best-selling version until several decades after the introduction of the 1611 King James Version! 10/09 Rare/Religion/Theology.
