Vincenzo Cartari
Le immagini degli Dei antichi ....
Lione appresso Bartolomeo Honorati
1581

Italian edition of the famous work by
Vincenzo Cartari, "Immagini de
li Dei de li Antichi" (Images of the Gods and Ancients), printed in Lyon by Bartholomeo Honorati
in1581.
The Italian edition was printed for the first time, without illustrations, by
Marcolini in 1556. The images of the ancient gods became a handbook for
the figurative arts, so much so that critics have drawn parallels between this
iconography and the works of many artists among whom Vasari and Poussin.
"The great illustrated Italian language edition of this famous and important
source book for Renaissance artists and poets. They used its representations of
the ancient gods and mythological figures as a model for their own works. The
popularity and influence of Cartari's book continued through the seventeenth
century. Cartari's (b. ca. 1500) work on the gods and their symbols is a key
work in the history of symbolism in the Renaissance and the manual for artists
as to the proper attributes of the dieties. [See Seznec's The Survival of the
Pagan Gods for a full discussion of the importance of this text.] Important
source book for Renaissance artists and poets who used representations of the
ancient gods and mythological figures in their works. The popularity and
influence of Cartari’s book continued through the seventeenth century."
