During the height of the American Revolution, when Benjamin Franklin was American minister to France, the great English explorer Captain James Cook was returning from his final voyage of discovery. Aware of the importance of the voyage, Franklin wrote a letter addressed to all American naval commanders guaranteeing the safe passage of Cook's ship the Resolution as it approached European waters.
This enlightened act inspired the design of The 1976 One Hundred Dollar Coin of the Cook Islands the first gold coin ever to bear a portrait of Benjamin Franklin.
 
 
Original portraits of both Franklin and Captain Cook by the world-famous artist James Berry; O.B.E. appear on one side of the coin. The other side bears the classic Arnold Machin portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
 
This One Hundred Dollar Cold Coin is an official monetary coin and can be spent at face value in the islands. It contains 9.60 grams of 900/1000 fine gold and was minted with a full Proof finish.
 
 
Issued in its special sealed cachet, this coin is a certified First Day of Minting Proof struck on August 19, 1976.
 
 
Proofs of this gold coin were minted in strictly limited edition by The Franklin Mint. No other Proofs of this coin will ever be minted.
