This set is a rare find. We have had it in our family store since 1950's. We moved in 1969 and it was put in storage 3rd floor of the building without air conditioning or heat. It was dug out in the 1980's and do to the temperature difference in storage some pieces have or had paint chipping. Some repair was attempted back then. It has been in the store display case since the late 1980's marked not for sale. Each piece is hand crafted and painted with a signature on the bottom. They are done is a papermache type hollow plaster baked hard. Each piece has glass eyes, even the animals. Mary and some of the kings have jewels on there robes. They are trimed with gold. Similar spainish statues are available now at the price of about $300. per piece. That would be over $6,000. per set. #1 Joseph is 10 1/2" tall chips on neck, red patches on purple robe. The back is nice and shinny and great shape. He has a removeable brass halo. #2 Mary is also 10 1/2" with a chip in blue on the left shoulder. Her face and right arm has small cracks if you look close but not ready to peel up. She has 7 small jewels inlaid in her robe. She has a medal halo that can be worn or taken off from 2 small holes in the back of the head. # 3 Baby Jesus is 10 1/2" long, lying in a wooden manger 12" long. The paint on his whole body is very cracked. It looks like it has a layer of bad laquer to seal it. He has beautiful glass eyes. #4 is the Ox of 10" long and 6" high. It has been touched up in 6-8 places, glass eyes are orange. The #5 Donkey is the same as the ox. #7,8,9,10 are the 4 sheep with golden glass eyes all in great shape.There are 2 laying down at 9" long and 5"tall. The standing sheep are 71/2" tall and 7" long. #11 the girl Sheperdess stands 16" has small cracks on face and right arm, but does not seem to be loose. It looks like her blue robe has be touched up. #12 the Waterman is 16" tall and in good shape, no chips or cracks. #13 Camel is 13" tall and 16" long, very colorful with chips on the inside of his legs and a little on green blanket. #13A camel boy is 9 1/2" tall in good shape. #14 Is the Sheperd Boy with a sheep at 14" tall. The sheep is fine, the boy is peeling and chipping on the blue dress in 7 spots, his left foot is peeling. The base has small chip near the left foot. #15 the Sheperd is 14" tall has several places where he is peeling on neck, left arm, cape in back. There is a small chip on the forhead. The kings are labeled #7 Standing King is 14 1/2" tall with a mark in the red. #8 Negro King 16 1/2" small mark on blue robe and small one on red cape.#8A Kneeling King is 11" comes with a loose crown and gold chest. He has a few tiny cracks in the back of the brown cape and 2 small chips in yellow part of the right knee. They are not loose just look like scratches.The markings on the bottom all have the same signature shown in the picture. It looks like a 6 crossed like a t followed by 01 .430 If serious buyers have other questions please let me know. There is no damage at all to the structure of these pieces just the top layers of paint our flaking. This set can be fully restored if someone has the time and talent. |
