1612 Original King James Bible
Rare edition "She" printing
Date - 1612/ 1613/ 1614: This is the second King James bible ever printed and the FIRST QUARTO EDITION of King James Version; printed in Roman type.
Size is about 6 3/4" wide, 8 1/2" tall, and about 3" thick.
Beautifully rebound sometime in the last decade with two extra fly leaves at front and back.
The 1612 edition is perhaps the rarest of all the printings. Some pages were reprinted with corrections and a few different wood cuts added but it still had many typo errors.
One change was the engraving of Adam and Eve was changed, with Eve covering her breasts with her left arm. But they missed the engraving of Lots wife, shown bare breasted before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah!
Beautiful Woodcut images
Current Value is $3,500.00 - $7,000.00
This book is quite unique and may be the only one of its kind.
It includes:
• The second printing of the Old Testament from 1612
• The second printing of the New Testament from 1612
• The original and complete Apocrypha
• The Genealogies from 1612
• The Book of Common Prayer from 1613
• The Epistle Dedication (signed at base by Frances Hooper)
• The Book Of Psalmes in Song form for church worship - from 1614
If you are a collector of early American history, this is a piece that only very few will ever see, much less own. And what a display it makes!
Originally, the King James Bible was printed with All 80 Books (including the Apocrypha which was Officially Removed in 1885) Leaving Only 66 Books.??
This edition has all 80 books.
"He" and "She" Bible - What is it?
There were many typographical errors in the first printing (dated 1611), as well as in several following printings.
The most famous is called the "He" and "She" Bibles. In Ruth 3:15 the 1st printing rendered the pronoun "He" instead of the correct "She" in the last sentence of that verse. (…"and "He" went into the citie, instead of the correct word "She"). This caused the misprinted King James Bibles to be known by collectors as "Great He" Bibles", and the correctly printed 1611 First Editions to be known as "Great She" Bibles.
How can you know which edition is the original? Both the "He" and the "She" Bibles of 1611 had 59 lines of type per page. The 1613 third Edition has 72 line type and is known as the "True She" Bible.
The bible pictured here is a 59 line type "She Bible" corrected in the year 1611.
As to which of the 1611 First Edition King James Bibles were printed or issued first, the 1611 "HE" Bible or the 1611"SHE" Bible, but most Scholars have now come to agree that the 1611 First Edition "He" and the 1611 First Edition "She" King James Bibles were probably printed at the SAME TIME on two different presses.
No other book has had greater influence on the English language or, on the English character.
For the next three hundred years the majority of English men and women heard the King James Bible read aloud Sabbath after Sabbath. We know that this early Bible was carried to America when the Pilgrims first landed on Plymouth Rock in December of 1620. They most likely had only a few copies. And I stress "few", as the print run was extremely limited to a few thousand total copies.
As this particular book was printed in England and found in America, it causes me to wonder when it actually made its trip. Did it arrive in those early days? And who owned it? It has on signature at he bottom of Epistle Dedication, Frances Hooper. Who was he?
When the Revolutionary War broke out, this is the bible that was used in the majority of the churches throughout the thirteen colonies. Chances are that this particular book
has quite a story to tell.
Condition: Please Read carefully...
The condition of this book is very amazing considering it's age of nearly 400 years old. The paper is very flexible and nearly all 1200 plus pages are in excellent condition, except for the following: there are only about five pages throughout the book that have roughness, or ragged edges, or minor pieces out at the boarder. The first two pages of the New Testament are missing and have been replaced with a copies, and the first engraved page of the old testament is missing and has been replaced with a copy (Genesis is complete, as are all other books). Beyond this, the book is quite beautiful, all original, and has over 1200 pages (I am in the midst of an exact count).
Further Histiory:
The King James Version of the Bible became the Bible of the English people. It became the most printed book in the history of the world. Incontestably the King James Version of the Bible has been one of the most influential books ever published, not only as a religious work, but also as a work of English literature. As the noted (now, late) Alan G. Thomas wrote in his Great Books and Great Collectors (p. 110), "No book has had greater influence on the English language or on the English character." ?
