Totius
Lemovici et Confinium provinciarum….
49 x 37.5 cm copperplate
engraving, 55 x 46 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam,
engraved circa 1630, printed 1636 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Limousin featuring a detailed inset map of Limoges published by Jan Jansson (1588-1664), son in law to Henricus Hondius (1597-1651) from the 1636 English language edition of the Mercator/Hondius Atlas, Or A Geographicke Description of the World. The map is a close copy of the 1594 map of Limousin from the first atlas of France, the Théatre François of François Bougereau. The map was the first printed map of Limousin and was compiled by the Limoges physician Jean Fayen (1530-1616), who is credited as author here as well - Jansson and the Hondius family made no changes to the Fayen map whatsoever, although the engraving work is of a much finer quality than the earlier French plate - no surprise since it is from the burin of the master Peter van der Keere (1571-1646), also known as Petrus Kaerius.
Ornately garlanded title cartouche credits Fayen as author of the map:
To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Limoges to St. Junien as seen below measures just 7 cm actual size. Note tiny "bridges" over the Vienne, pictorial topography, tiny "trees" for forests:
Another garlanded cartouche frames the wonderfully decorative city plan of Limoges with 24 identified landmarks:
Taking a closer look at van den Keere's remarkably detailed engraving work shows that the spire of Église Saint-Pierre-du-Queyroix (B) measures just 2 cm from the ground to the top. Indeed this entire miniature city plan is presented within ~ 9 cm diameter walls:
The arms of Limoges which feature the image of St. Martial (the first bishop of Limoges in the third century) are presented in a handsome frame. Latin text is Fayen's original dedication and commentary:
A ram presides over a
garlanded mileage scale - note elegant calligraphy Flourish at upper
left and "overspill" of the town of Perigeuse into map border:
Map does exhibit offset mainly in centrefold area, some of which is quite pronounced as can be seen in the photo below. See condition description below for more information on this condition:
The extensive English text
on verso assembled by the Hondius family from a variety of sources and
extensively embellished by the English translator Henry Hexham is a
fascinating document in and of itself - a representative excerpt is
presented below:
...The Limosins are good husbands, sparing in their diet and contented with a little, hating liquorishness, but great Eaters of Bread, for which they have a proverb that the Limosin is a Glutton for Bread... ...For the most part they are very laborious, ingenious, crafty and subtill, not rash headed but provident for them selves and their affairs yet this Vice reignes amoung them - they will go to Lawe one with another for a trifle, and which is worse, they are taxed for giving of money to procure false witness...
Condition - Please note carefully: This 373-year-old map is in overall good condition as can be ascertained from photos; strong impression with distinct platemark, good quality hand made laid paper, full margins, centrefold as issued, hand colour work of the finest calibre. Part of original binder's strip is present in centrefold area on verso - its outline is visible in centrefold area and shows slight browning as can be seen in photos. As noted the map exhibits some pronounced offset throughout. This offset does not affect legibility, but it is certainly prominent in centrefold area and can be evaluated for what it is by reviewing photo thereof. The offset elsewhere such as around title cartouche or mileage scale as can be seen in photos thereof is considerably less pronounced and the overall appearance if matted and framed would be certainly more than acceptable. In addition there is some pronounced creasing in centrefold area, with prominent vertical creases present on either side of centrefold. A few minor chips to margin extremities, a little excess printers ink in addition to offset. Inquiries welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions on eBay.
