Gouvernement de l'Isle de France 49.5
x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving, 55 x 46 cm sheet size, modern hand
colour, Amsterdam, 1636 We are pleased to offer this scarce original French regional map of the environs of Paris by the prolific Amsterdam cartographer and publisher Jan Jansson (1588-1664), the chief competitor of the Blaeu family during the golden age of Dutch map-making. Jansson (also known as Janssonius) married the daughter of the great engraver and cartographer Jodocus Hondius in 1612 and published his maps independently, but he joined the Hondius firm in 1630 and began contributing maps to their popular Mercator/Hondius atlas, eventually taking over the firm after the death of his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius in 1638. Jansson's original maps are nearly all derivative of other earlier maps (he often made close copies of Blaeu maps, presumably to the great irritation of Joan Blaeu) but they are all very finely engraved, and usually quite decorative. This example of the map is from the 1636 English language edition of the Mercator/Hondius Atlas, Or A Geographicke Description of the World, and the extensive English text on verso makes for an interesting accompaniment to the map itself. The plate (Van der Krogt 4300:1B) saw limited use with Jansson replacing it with the more commonly seen map (Van der Krogt 4300:1C) of the same title that is a close copy of Blaeu's map. Rightly considered as a rare map, it is presented with an unusual northeastern orientation so that Beauvais, for example, appears to the upper right of Paris and the path of the Seine is more or less vertical. Wonderfully decorative, this example will make a fine presentation if matted and framed.
Decorative title cartouche - note tiny "bricks" in frame:
Paris - note "Momartre" shown at some remove from the city:
To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Chartres to Corbeil measures just 7 cm actual size:
Handsome mileage scale -
note compass rose at upper left showing map orientation:
...The city is defended from the Violence of the River with foure small Iles, lying in a line as Barrs, and were first inhabited by reason of the commodiousnesse of the site, into which the people had wont to goe over upon wodden bridges, as lying in the heart of the City, where the Kings and the Bishops Palaces stand...
Condition - Please note carefully: The map is in overall good condition as can judged from photos, strong impression with a prominent platemark, good quality laid paper with watermark. Part of original binders strip is present on verso; its outline shows slightly darker and is also faintly visible as faint secondary vertical lines running parallel to centrefold. The map also exhibits some minor offset, mainly in centrefold area and nothing significant. There is also a vertical crease to the right of and more or less parallel to centrefold. A little insignificant soiling and creasing is present in margin extremities, which are frayed in places with chips. The hand colouring work is very fine and this scarce and decorative map will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed.
