Venezuela
cum parte Australi Novae Andalusiae
48 x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving, 55 x 46 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved 1634, printed 1641 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Venezuela and nearby islands by Willem Blaeu (1571-1638), who after an apprenticeship in astronomy with Tycho Brahe established in Amsterdam the foremost cartographic firm of the 17th century. This map was included in many editions of Blaeu atlases published subsequently by Blaeu's son and successor Joan Blaeu (1599-1673) and this example is a fine early impression from the 1641 German edition of the Atlas Novus. The map extends from west of the Guajira peninsula to Trinidad, Tobago and the mouth of the Orinoco and shows the Windward Islands up to Dominica as well as the Lesser Antilles including Curaçao and Aruba.
The map is visually anchored by its handsome title cartouche with twin compass roses and radiating rhumb lines:
A handsome ship sails near Granada:
Golfo de Venezuela, Lago de Maracaibo:
Santiago de León de Caracas and environs - note pictorial topography, tiny "trees", parrot:
Dutch engraver attempt at South American monkeys:
Mileage scale, mouth of the Orinoco - note banks off Trinidad: ![]() Baa.
Blaeu's extensive German text on verso is a fascinating document in and of itself - an excerpt below in translation: "The soil of this land is exceptionally fertile and the sugar canes there grow to enormous height and size. There is an abundance of honey and grapes and the land produces a fair amount of wheat as well. The inhabitants, however, prefer corn with which they prepare a paste with cane sugar from which they bake delicious round loaves of bread that can be kept for a long time as if they were biscuits..."
