This finely engraved hand coloured original antique map of Japan, Korea and surrounding lands was published by Jan Jansson in the 1658 edition of Nieuwen Atlas.
Beginning in 1657 Jansson supplemented the folio editions of his Atlas with several maps. He took the opportunity to enlarge the scale of the new map of Japan.
Ezo, with its new coastlines, soars powerfully over northern Honshu. Vries had not realised in 1643 the at he was already sailing along the southern coast of Kunashiri and thus took it to be part of Ezo. Then he sailed between Etorofu (Iturup) and Urup and hit the eastern coast of Sakhalin, which he also took to be part of Ezo. As a consequence of these misunderstandings, for the following century and a half Ezo was depicted in European cartography as far too large. The island of Urup, called "De Companijs Landt" by Vries, of which he had seen a small part of the western coast, is expanded here to a powerful land mass that is limited only by the edge of the map. The ocean depths that have been measured by the crews of the Dutch ships on Vries expedition are indicated for Ezo and the Kurils, as well as for the northeastern coast of Honshu and the Izu Islands. Jansson used the additional space created by increasing the scale of the map to add further place-names. In doing so, he not only introduced additional transcription errors e.g. "Kinokmi" instead of "Kinokuni" but also incorrectly indicated the position of places that had been included before. For example he moved "Iede" (still correctly designated "Iedo" in 1648) northward from the bay of Edo into the interior, to the source of a river that flows into the Sea of Japan. The Izu island group is now geographically correctly positioned south of the Bay of Sagami and is depicted and described in detail. (Ref: Walter; Koeman; Tooley)

Johannes Janssonius, more commonly known to us as Jan Jansson, was born in Arnhem where his father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). In 1612 he married the daughter of the cartographer and publisher Jodocus Hondius, and then set up in business in Amsterdam as a book publisher. In 1616 he published his first maps of France and Italy and from then onwards he produced a very large number of maps, perhaps not quite rivaling those of the Blaeu family but running a very close second in quantity and quality.
From about 1630 to 1638 he was in partnership with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, issuing further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlases to which his name was added. On the death of Henricus he took over the business, expanding the atlas still further, until eventually he published an 11-volume Atlas Major on a scale similar to Blaeu's Atlas Major.
The first full edition of Jansson's English County Maps was published in 1646 but some years earlier he issued a number of British maps in the Mercator/Hondius/Jansson series of atlases (1636-44); the maps were printed from newly engraved plates and are different from the later 1646 issue and are now rarely seen (see Appendix B for further details). In general appearance Jansson's maps are very similar to those of Blaeu and, in fact, were often copied from them, but they tend to be more flamboyant and decorative.
After Jansson's death his heirs published a number of maps in an Atlas Contractus in 1666, later still many of the plates of his British maps were acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valck who published them again in 1683 as separate maps |
