Description: It is an original copper engraved antique map from John Speed's Prospect of the most Famous Parts of the World, London, 1675. It is engraved by Petrus Kaerius [van der Keere], whose name appears near the top title block. The map was actually designed in 1646, with some of the maps bearing this date in the Atlas. Kaerius died in 1646 as well, but was printed later for the 1675 atlas, a very common practice. John Speed was actually a taylor by trade with an interest in cartography, producing some of the most accurate maps of the period, the first englishman to publish a world atlas. His plates were engraved by the Dutch mapmaker Kaerius also known as Peter van der Keere, brother-in-law to Hondius, who worked in England briefly. This map is from the miniature version of a similar atlas published in a larger format. The miniature editions were produced as a traveler's atlas. The atlas that this map came from was combined with the Theater of the Empire of Great Britain, an atlas of British county maps, which I will be listing over the next few days. These were not published in color although many sellers have added color in modern times to enhance, we are offering the map as it was originally published. Also included are several double sided pages of the original text that accompanied the image and the original atlas title page will be shipped with this map, so it will certainly be well documented. The map is not matted nor mounted, single detached leaf in original condition. A very interesting map showing many anomalies such as Korea as an Island, a very strange shape for Japan, a large Canton Bay and several large Lakes inside China. It also shows part of America or Alaska in the top left corner. This is an extremely rare map! A Beautiful and Rare Map that will frame up nicely.
Size: The map image measures approximately 3 1/2 by 5 inches on a 4 1/4 by 6 1/2" page.
Condition: The map is in Good to Very condition for its age with overall tonal aging and some darkening as can be seen in the pic. There are slight dampstains along the top and bottom edges, nothing affecting the map image and a slight nick out of the top left margin as can be seen in the pic. It is printed on good quality paper, not brittle, very flexible. There is text in English on the reverse that shows through a little, mainly noticeable in the margin. Overall, a very nice example for its age with a quality antique appearance. The pics are accurated and show all, so take a good look.
