Der Spiel Haus

8.8 x 7.5 cm copperplate engraving (image size), 15 x 9 cm sheet size, Regensburg, 1697-1699

We are pleased to offer this scarce original print from the Ständebuch (Book of Trades) of Johann Christoph Weigel (1654-1725), a prominent German engraver of maps and book illustrations.  The illustrations and accompanying text celebrate the work ethic, and provide a fascinating glimpse into the technology, everyday work life and social fabric of Germany in the late 17th century.  As a genre, the "Book of Trades" was popular for the better part of 200 years following the 1568 appearance of the famous woodcut-illustrated Ständebuch by Jost Amman and Hans Sachs.  A master of copperplate engraving, Weigel was able to incorporate much more detail into these miniature compositions than the woodcut medium allows, and these charming prints are quite sought-after by discerning collectors.  Working over a period of three years in the late 1690s, Weigel produced more plates than could be used in the first edition of the Ständebuch  and some were not published until a decade later in another "Book of Trades" published under the title Etwas für Alle.  This print depicts gentlemen at a German gaming house - eagerly anticipating a roll of the dice.

We present the image area significantly enlarged for clarity - it is remarkable that this level of engraved detail can be compressed into a tiny 88 mm x 75 mm frame:

Condition - Please note carefully:   Print is in very good condition as can be ascertained from photo, strong impression on fine laid paper, somewhat uneven trim to left margin, some trivial soiling as can be evaluated in photos. Note - this is a miniature print (15 x 9 cm sheet size as noted) and above image is shown significantly enlarged for clarity.  Inquiries welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions on eBay for more Weigel prints from this series.
