Contains 29 large engraved plates; heavy oversize book. Text in Dutch with some Greek, Hebrew and Latin; heavy oversize book, five pounds four ounces. A translation of Cave’s Latin Antiquitates apostolicæ and Apostolici; first Dutch edition, two works in one. Both have full title pages, the first in red-black text, each have engraved vignettes, and both are 1698. The engraved title page by Joseph Mulder is after Jan Goeree. The twenty-eight plates by Pieter Sluyter (also after Jan Goeree) are depictions of the Apostles and early church fathers along with scenes from their lives. There is one in-text engraving, on page 209 of the first work, between Petrus and Andreas, which shows a Roman praying at an altar with Greek inscription on one side and a fire burning on top. The whole contains numerous engraved initial letters and tail-pieces. The second work also includes a 30 page chronological table. HISTORY: William Cave’s two works (full titles below) were published as a continuation of Jeremy Taylor’s Antiquitates christianæ, or, The Life and Death of the Holy Jesus. 1. Antiquitates apostolicæ, or, The history of the lives, acts and martyrdoms of the holy apostles of our Savior, and the two evangelists, SS. Mark and Luke to which is added an introductory discourse concerning the three great dispensations of the church, patriarchal, Mosaical, and evangelical. 2. Apostolici: or, the history of the lives, acts, death and martyrdoms of those who were contemporary with, or immediately succeeded the apostles; as also the most eminent of the primitive fathers for the first three hundred years to which is added a chronology of the first three ages of the church. Salomon Bor (1639-1705), Dutch Reformed theologian, translator and editor, minister of the Church at Ter Aa, best known for translations produced for numerous works, including William Cave’s Apostolici. Full calf with boards that are detached, rubbed, scuffed and worn at edges; spine has six raised bands. Backstrip is scuffed, with gilt rules and gilt title on red panel: Apostolische Oudbeden. Front paste-down bookplate: Peter Hertzog Theological Hall Library. Front free endpaper is lacking; back free endpaper and last two leaves of text are attached to back board. The two preceding leaves of text are detached, creased and chipped at edges. The dedication leaf lacks part of the tail fore-corner area; a fifth or so of the text affected. A plate appears to have been excised from between pages 340 and 341 of the first work, the section on Judas, as well as from the section on Ireneus in the second work, between pages 202 and 203, and Tertullianus between 240 and 241 (page 241 is detached as a result). Plate 22 has a four inch tear at top near joint. Binding is otherwise tight, no loose, missing, bent or torn pages other than noted; some small edge chips, creases and tears. Leaves have little foxing, some age tone in places; no significant fading or offset. Page edges are speckled; includes detached pink cloth placeholder.
