Above is the complete first work title page.

Contains 29 large engraved plates; heavy oversize book.

Text in Dutch with some Greek, Hebrew and Latin; heavy oversize book, five pounds four ounces.

A translation of Cave’s Latin Antiquitates apostolicæ and Apostolici; first Dutch edition, two works in one. Both have full title pages, the first in red-black text, each have engraved vignettes, and both are 1698.

The engraved title page by Joseph Mulder is after Jan Goeree. The twenty-eight plates by Pieter Sluyter (also after Jan Goeree) are depictions of the Apostles and early church fathers along with scenes from their lives.

There is one in-text engraving, on page 209 of the first work, between Petrus and Andreas, which shows a Roman praying at an altar with Greek inscription on one side and a fire burning on top.

The whole contains numerous engraved initial letters and tail-pieces. The second work also includes a 30 page chronological table.

HISTORY:

William Cave’s two works (full titles below) were published as a continuation of Jeremy Taylor’s Antiquitates christianæ, or, The Life and Death of the Holy Jesus.

1. Antiquitates apostolicæ, or, The history of the lives, acts and martyrdoms of the holy apostles of our Savior, and the two evangelists, SS. Mark and Luke to which is added an introductory discourse concerning the three great dispensations of the church, patriarchal, Mosaical, and evangelical.

2. Apostolici: or, the history of the lives, acts, death and martyrdoms of those who were contemporary with, or immediately succeeded the apostles; as also the most eminent of the primitive fathers for the first three hundred years to which is added a chronology of the first three ages of the church.
