16th C utility knife historic repro of museum find (H)

We are very excited to be able to offer this top quality reproduction, shown side by side with the original historic knife in most of these photos (original utility knife is not included in this auction). This is a replica of the quintessential utility knife illustrated in many works of art between the 16th and 17th centuries. As can be viewed in the bottom-most photo, an inset from Wedding Dance 1566 (Pieter Brugel the Elder), the knife is designed to hang from the belt by a cord. This was a common way of carrying a utility knife throughout this time period. The original utility knife was authenticated and sold by Monaco House Auctions (it is in my possession). I personally had the original copied in India, assisting and supervising in the recreation process so that the reproduction knife would meet exacting standards. This is an extremely well made, well thought out, and serviceable knife; the same quality as the original. The high carbon steel blade is heat treated and fully functional. The tang and method of fitting to the handle is the same as the original. The horn handle is slightly larger then the original to accommodate a modern hand. The wire wrap is mixed copper and brass which serves to tighten and re-enforce the tang. The scabbard is leather over hand carved wood, very nicely done. Even the detail of the two small serrations on the point of the blade is recreated; which allowed the knife to be better used as a fork when sticking food. The serrations would work as a stop to keep from stabbing delicate food items too far. Very useful! In the original, the leather has shrunk so it does not cover the blade which we corrected in the reproduction. The old model also has solder on the wire wrap and a hole drilled through the handle. I do not believe these to be original and have not included them in the reproduction. This replica is top quality in every way and of limited production.
