Regni Daniae 56 x

cm copperplate
engraving, 60 x 53 cm sheet size, original and later hand colour,
Nürnberg, circa 1720
We are pleased to offer this scarce and exceptionally decorative original map of Denmark by the Imperial Geographer Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724). Founder of the leading German map publishing firm of the 18th century, Homann's cartography was often not original but his superb engraving work and distinctively bold hand colour style often "improved" on the original. This map is a case in point - it is a beautifully engraved and highly decorative close copy of a circa 1680 map by the Dutch mapmaker and publisher Frederik de Wit (1630-1706) which in turn was derived from a map of the same title by Nicolas Visscher issued in 1656. De Wit's map was also copied by the Amsterdam publisher Justus Danckerts (1635-1701) and while the plates are virtually identical, it would seem that the engraver was working from the Danckerts version for this close copy. The flamboyant cartouche featuring the traditional Danish Vildmannen is likely from the burin of Homann himself and this well preserved example map will make a fine presentation if matted and framed.
Uncoloured as was always Homann's practice with cartouches, we see the traditional "Wild Men", described in accounts of Danish heraldry as "supporters - two wild men proper armed with clubs". Curiously, Homann credits Hamburg based historian and geographer Johannes Hübner (1668-1731) as contributing to the cartography, but the map is merely a copy of De Wit's with really no original cartography whatsoever. The depiction of the Kongevåben (Royal Arms) is a variant of its modern form:
Turning to the map itself, we find pictorial topography and tiny "trees" - to get a sense of detail consider that the distance from Copenhagen to Malmö as seen below measures just 4 cm actual size (Øresund bridge not shown):

Condition - Please note carefully: Map is in very good condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with distinct platemark, image area essentially pristine. A band of soft creasing ~ 3 cm wide is present left of and parallel to centrefold and part of original binding strip is present on verso; its outline is visible as a second vertical crease parallel to centrefold as can be seen in photo above. Minor soiling to upper left margin and minor creases to upper corners of map border. In all a well-preserved example of a classic Homann map that will make a fine presentation if matted and framed.
