Very
modest opening bid on an absolutely wonderful little Oxford 1730 edition
of the Old and New Testament, bound with a Bay Psalm Book printed
especially for use in the New-England colonies.
I
have never seen a Bay Psalm Book offered at anything even remotely like
this price. . . but it came in surprisingly reasonable and is thus offered
to start at a VERY good price.
This particular
Bible imprint not listed in Darlow and Moule, and indeed, we could not
trace another of the same. Inscribed on the ffep Dorothy Crosbey. Her
book: Novemeber Ye 7 Anno Domini 1735.
There are then two
inserted notes:
1. Dorothy Crosbey:
Her great grandmother, Sara Chamberlain, died in a Cambridge, Mass jail in
1692 before she could be brought to trial - for witchcraft. She died of
starvation and cold and was, probably in her thirties. Her daughter,
Sarah, married, and became, Sara Shedd. They had a daughter who they named
Sara, this Sara Shedd (Jr.) married Simon Crosbey. Sara Shedd Crosby and
Simon Crosby had a daughter named Dorothy Crosbey, born 1712. She married,
1736, Benjamin Whiting who was ambushed and killed, at 23 years old, by
renegade Indians. then Dorothy Crosby Whiting married her deceased
husband's brother, Eleazer. This was a social and biblical sin, so Dorothy
and Eleazer moved to Pelham, New Hampshire - where he became a school
master. He taught for 40 years, moved to Wilton, N.H., where he lived with
his son, Oliver Whiting. Eleazer and Dorothy had twin sons, Nathan and
Oliver, both served in the American Revolution. From Oliver, who married,
Martha Abbott, we are descended.
2. (An earlier
note) Helen, we find this book with Aunt Kitt's Books and think it was
your grand-mothers on your mother's side. Grandma Poole. (Then in another
hand) Indeed not, Dorothy Crosbey of Andover, Mass. married two Whiting
boys, the first killed by Indians in his 20's. After marrying his brother,
they were forced to leave Mass for N.H. as that was a sinful act. Oldest,
most valuable book in our collection. HPM.
Further very faint
signature on rfep L. Whiting, Dec 15, 1898.
Please note that
after the Old and New Testaments is also bound a very fine
1729 London imprint, done especially for New England, of the third
and final edition (here noted as 17th edition, but technically a
later imprint of the Third Edition) of the Bay Psalm Book.
Very rare Bible by
itself, wonderful early American provenance, and then a Bay Psalm Book to
boot!
Please note
another site has a 1713 same edition Bay Psalm Book for sale at $27,000,
not retaining original binding as
here!
