Johann Jacob Rambachs 1693 to 1735 Der Heil. Schrift Prof. Ord. in Halle Betrachtungen uber das gantze Leiden Christi Im Oelgarten, vor dem geistlichen Gericht der Juden, vor dem weltlichen Geticht Pilati und Herodis, und auf dem Berge Folgotha; Nach der Harmonischen Beschreibung, 1730, Johann Bernhard Hartung, Jena, (The Suffering of Jesus by Pilate and Herod on Golgotha), with 6 full pages plates, 1 ½ page plate, 2 pages with printers devices, red and black ink text on the title page, marbled end papers.
A rare formidable volume in and of itself (could not find one for sale online), made all the more rare by a unique fore-edge design on the side, top, and bottom edges. The design is etched into the book, and color added inside the medallion. This does not function as a painted fore-edge in which an image is displayed when the edges are fanned, but the etching does spread out to a larger design when fanned. The colors inside the medallion appear to be more of a marbleized design rather than an image or scene. With gilt on the outside of the medallion.
CONDITION: Bindings holding strong, board rubbed and worn, spine in strong condition with decorative bands, inside the pages are strong and clean with general agetoning throughout. Front blank end paper detached, writing on front end paper, fore-edge in good condition. Overall, with minor aging, a rare and collectible fore-edge design book.
