Tartariae
Maioris Sive Asiaticae Tabula
54 x 47.5 cm copperplate engraving, 61 x 52 cm sheet size, original and later hand colour, Nürnberg, 1739 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of the Russian Empire encompassing much of Asia from the firm of Homann Erben (Heirs), the leading German map publisher of the 18th century. Founded by the Imperial Geographer Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) the firm was later managed by his sons and the noted astronomer Tobias Mayer (1723-1762). The map was compiled by the Wittenberg mathematician and cartographer Johann Matthias Haas (1684-1742) using a "Stereographic Projection" devised by the Leipzig based mathematician August Gottlob Böhme (1719-1797). Originally issued in 1730 under the title "Imperii Russici et Tartariae" the plate was here revised to add a second cartouche at upper left featuring a portrait of Empress Anna of Russia (1693-1740) and the cartouche at lower left reengraved to revise the title. A handsome map with some fascinating cartographic misconceptions, this well preserved example will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed.
The portrait of empress Anna may be a bit flattering - Carlyle described her face as "comparable to a Westphalian ham". Note Athena figure with gorgon shield and military figure at left both holding prisoners in subjugation:
The title cartouche features the vignette of a bear hunt - note that the previous title text was not entirely ground away in reworking the plate and remains faintly visible. 1730 date is for original issue, this example was printed in 1739 and is so dated in lower margin:
European Russia - to get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from St. Petersburg to Moscow as seen below measures just 4 cm actual size::
Note Novaya Zemlya shown as connected to mainland and no indication of the Matochkin Strait which divides the two principal islands:
Hokkaido is shown as connected to the mainland, while the mythical "Terra Societatis" is shown in tentative outline:
Note
Aral Sea at its full size before its virtual destruction in the 20th
century at the hands of the Soviets - an environmental disaster that
can be reversed:
Vastness of Siberia:
Tibet is shown as the home of "Dalai Lamae":
Map covers most of China:
Somewhat speculative far north:
Condition - Please note carefully: This large map is in overall very good condition as can be ascertained by photos, strong impression with prominent platemark, image area essentially pristine, hand colour bright and vivid. Some trivial soiling and a little excess printers ink as issued is present in margins; overall an exceptionally well preserved example. Centrefold as issued, no text on verso.
