| Abstract: | This
guide is designed for Estonian language training of Peace Corps workers
in Estonia, is intended for use in a competency-based language training
program, and reflects daily communication needs in that context. It
consists of 52 lessons, each addressing a specific language competency,
organized in 14 topical units. An introductory section gives background
information on the Estonian language, its phonology, morphology, and
syntax. The instructional units follow. Each is prefaced by a page
describing an aspect of Estonian culture. The lessons include a
statement of the targeted competency, a brief dialogue, vocabulary
list, explanatory grammar and vocabulary notes, and pronunciation
notes. Some lessons include a proverb. Unit topics include personal
identification, classroom orientation, conversation with host
counterpart or family, communication services, food, money,
transportation, giving and getting directions, shopping, invitations
and social situations, community services, discussing work, and health
and illness. Appended materials include a list mof the competencies,
dialogue translations, additional grammatical constructions, additional
topical vocabulary, and an Estonian-English glossary. (MSE) |
