We are pleased to offer this scarce original map original map of Switzerland from the firm of Homann Erben (Heirs), the leading German map publisher of the 18th century. Founded by the Imperial Geographer Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724), the firm was later managed by his sons and the noted astronomer Tobias Mayer (1723-1762) who was the compiler of this map. Quite decorative with charming pictorial topography, the map features a handsome of thirteen armorial escutcheons for the Swiss Cantons and this very well preserved example will make a fine presentation if matted and framed.
We begin our survey of the map with the title cartouche and its fine heraldic cartouches. The bear of Bern and the bull with nose ring of Uri both date to the 13th century, while the image of St. Fridolinus for Glarus and the ram of Schaffhausen date to the 14th century. The key of the old Canton Unterwalden remains in use in its divisions of Obwalden and Nidwalden. while the red staff of Basel remains in use for Basel-Land today as well.:
Turning to the map itself we find that Mayer has provided a wealth of placenames down to the tiniest village in this densely engraved plate. To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Basel to Zurich as seen below measures just 12 cm actual size:
Geneva and environs, then part of France:
Handsome rococo frame for the legend:
Lakes Maggiore, Lugano and Como:
Pictorial Alps in Graubunden:
