Overview & Area: Attractive copper-engraved map of Western Africa, reaching from todays Senegal to Gabon and inland until Niger.

With numerous annotations (geography, colonies, slave trade, etc). With large blank and unexplored areas, containing only vague or mystical details. Includes the Ghana Lake, Niger river, many towns and cities, Maberia lake, Sahara desert, and much more.

Decorated with a large title cartouche showing African natives in a village, many are explained by text below the map. There are three distance scale shown on elephant tusks. The title is given in latin and french on top of the map.

This map is an guaranteed original copper engraving, printed and published in Nuremberg in 1743. J. B. Homann was on of the most important and profilic mapmakers in the early 18th century. After his death, his heirs successfully continued the business. => One of the best and most interesting maps of West Africa! 

Size: engraved area approx.: 19.65" x 21.85" Inches; 50 x 55,5 cm

Condition: Good impression, printed on hand-laid paper! Slightly faded print to center of the map. Real watermark incoorperated into the paper - visible when held against the light! With light uneven age-toning and a few tiny yellow/brownish spots. Central fold and margins with some browning and wear. Short repaired split to the centerfold bottom. Some additional creasing. Small handwritten word in bottom border. Margins cut close.
Still in very attractive and decorative antiquarian condition! => Have a look at the photos for more detail!
