56
x 49 cm copperplate engraving, 68 x 52 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Paris, 1739

We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of the "Kingdom of Hungary, Principalities of Transylvania, Slovenia, Croatia, and Part of the Principalities of Wallachia, Bonsia, Serbia and Bulgaria" by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) who with his son Didier (1723-1786) dominated 18th century French cartography,  applying their famous motto of bel et utile to create a distinctive "modern" style of mapmaking.   This map (Pedley 288) is essentially bisected by the Danube, and includes much of what is now Romania and the Balkan States and is representative of the clear and well composed, orderly style Vaugondy championed.  Featuring a fine baroque cartouche and superb engraving work, this large and handsome map will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed.

Baroque title cartouche is probably engraved by the master Jean-Charles Baquoy:

To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Presburg (now Bratislava) to Budapest as seen below measures just 9 cm actual size::

Lake Balaton and environs - note tiny "forests" along Danube, pictorial topography and fortifications:

Tokay and environs:

Map extends as far as the Adriatic

Placenames are given in German form, e.g. Groswaradin for what is now Oradea, Clausenburg for what is now Cluj-Napoca:

Danube passing into Bulgaria on its way to the Black Sea:

Condition - Please note carefully:   This large map is in overall very good condition as can be ascertained by photos, strong impression with prominent platemark, image area essentially pristine, hand colour bright and vivid.  The map exhibits a faint waterstain in upper left margin but it does not cross into image area as can be seen in photo above.   There is a very thin "as issued" crease near map centre which appears to be a printing error slightly truncating a few letters, ~ 8 cm in length, scarcely noticeable.  The map exhibits a repaired separation to lower centrefold, ~ 3 cm past neatline before terminating.  Some minor soiling and chips to margin extremities, somewhat close trim to top margin, very wide side margins, a few cities neatly underscored in manuscript, centrefold as issued, no text on verso.   Inquiries welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions on eBay.
