We are pleased to offer this scarce map of Southeast Asia engraved for inclusion in Thomas Salmon's epic work "The Universal Traveller; or a Compleat Description of the Several Nations of the World." The map is a reduction and simplified close copy of an earlier map (circa 1720) compiled by Hermann Moll for the East India Company. The map was also later copied by the Royal Hydrographer and prolific British mapmaker Thomas Kitchin (1718-1784), and was published as late as the 1780s thus presenting cartography that was some six decades out of date. The map extends from the Malabar Coast of India to southern Japan and includes all of the East Indian Islands. The map names the Straits of Singapore, Canton and Macao are shown and Kyushu is shown as "Bongo".

This handsome map features fine hand colour work of the highest order and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed.
