Heavy oversize book, weighs 11 pounds 8 ounces; Vol. I. only of two, first published in one volume with five books in 1733. The current volume consists of the original five books and an unusual number of plates. The closest edition found was 1772 with the same pagination and a total of 104 copperplates in two volumes. There are 69 out of 70 large engraved plates in this volume, 5 of which are folding (see last two listing pictures). The frontispiece is lacking. Plates are engraved after various artists by G. Vander Gucht, with a few engraved by J. Hulett, R. & N. Parr, E. Rooker, Kirkall, G. Scotin, Claud Du. Boise, G. Bickham, I. Mason, A. Benoist, C. Mosley, I. S. Miller, S. F. Ravenet, and I. Mynde (as noted below under Plates). The first page of the Apparatus and each of the five books has an engraved three panel head-piece with associated scenes, all of which are signed by Hulett (see second listing picture for an example). Includes red-black title page, engraved capitals, and engraved head- and tail- pieces. Text is mostly in double column format with printed marginalia, extensive annotation, and bibliographical references.
BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Stackhouse (1677-1752), English Anglican theologian, minister, writer, preacher, historian, biographer, wrote New History of the Holy Bible, Life of Bishop Atterbury, and A Complete Body of Divinity. Spine has five woven raised bands. Backstrip is chipped, with gilt rules and gilt title on red panel: Stackhouse’s Hst of the Bible. Internal condition: Front free endpaper, flyleaf and frontispiece are lacking; back flyleaf is creased and back free endpaper is lacking. Binding is otherwise tight, no loose, missing, bent or torn pages other than noted; a few small edge creases and chips, a few minor misfolds in a couple of the folding plates.
