1758 Bellin "Carte Reduite des Mers du Nord..."
This is a 13 x 18 inch (33 x46 cm)copper-plate engraved map by Nicholas Bellin ( Paris 1703-1772). This map has modern, professionally applied color. Decorative cartouche. Dozen of place names, both in French and English. Source of this map is Prevost’s "Histoire des Voyages". Overall condition is VG+ to Near Fine -. On heavy paper. A very nice map in all respects.
Bellin covers the area from the east Coast of Labrador and Baffin Island (North as far as 72 degrees and "Isle James", which is likely in actuality part of Baffin Island), the southern portion of Greenland, Iceland and NW Europe. Exquisite detail with dozens of place names ( some still in use). Jan Mayen (here Jean Mayen) noted and a curious "Bird Island at 77 Degrees N (Possibly the S end of Spitsbergen Island?). All in all a superb map of the region and scarce in this projection.
