1767 Clouet Map - World
L'Abbe Jean Baptiste Louis Cloet was a member of L'Academie Royale des Sciences de Rouen and an important French cartographer in the last half of the 18th century. Today, apart from splendid individual wall maps, he is best-known for his 'Geographie moderne', a world atlas which featured maps centred on a page with panels of descriptive text on either side. This map comes from that work and represents the chance for the collector to acquire an unusual map.
This map of the World shows a large and completely distorted Australian continent, much of the eastern coast was as yet un-mapped; and the North West of of North America is also unknown - the map features the speculative, erroneous, Western Sea.
The map measures 19.5" by 12" (engraved area), and has a centrefold (as issued). The hand colouring is original washcolouring as with all Clouet maps. The map is in fairly good condition - there is an area of browning in the lower centre of the page, and creasing along the centrefold.
The map is guaranteed to be over 225 years old.
