RARE BRITISH MILITARY RULES ON EVE OF REVOLUTION
"The Military Medley, Containing the most necessary Rules and Regulations for attaining a Competent Knowledge of the Art: To which is added an Explanation of Military Terms, Alphabetically Digested" London: publisher unknown, 1768.
Second edition, and the second of Captain Simes' six books on the various aspects of the art of war, this one having a subscriber list of over 330 officers, as well as instructors and students of leading military academies of the time. Includes a Military Dictionary with examples of typical military forms of the time as well as nine colored fold-out sheets depicting military formations, numerous charts, etc.
Simes wrote a series of books about the British Military, best known perhaps for his "The Military Guide for Young Officers", which was also imported from London and then printed in Philadelphia during the Revolutionary war. A copy was owned by George Washington. The book for sale in this auction is the rarer copy of Simes Military Medley, instructing the protocol of common soldiers and their officers, including options that allowed officers to put to immediate death insubordination by lower officers during the heat of battle in order not to risk a breakdown in control of the ranks. This book, from 1768, predates many of Sime’s currently available books on the Military. No copies of this Military Medley are available for sale at this time on the internet.
This book is full of interesting Military information of the British forces shortly before the war, conduct of officers and soldiers, battle preparation, controlling inventory, protocol for handling internal conflicts, protection and care of military weapons and gear, instruction for drum signals to direct formations, spying and handling of spies, numerous charts and maps, including 12 fold out charts, maps, and battle plans, some with color.
Some of the chapter headings: Form of a regimental Court-martial, Form of advertising deserters, Return of the casualties of a company, of ammunition, flints, etc., Directions for fitting and making the clothing, The preparations which are generally made for an assault on a considerable out-work, or the body of the place, of the marching of an army, The common order of battle or general disposition ordered by he King of Prussia, Scheme for a mess in camp, for dinner or supper, Dimensions of a tent, Of the sounds of a drum, Young officers apt to exceed their orders from a mistaken zeal, Method of sending for the colours, Funeral ceremony of subalterns, An estimate of the funeral expense of a soldier, Widows pensions, etc, etc, etc.
CONDITION: Rebound in rich full tan morocco with raised bands and gilt decoration, with lettering on the spine, strongly bound, pages in excellent clean condition, fold out plates in very good condition (some splitting at some of the folds). A beautiful copy, and a rare opportunity to own this book from the Simes series. I don’t believe this book was printed in the colonies as was the Military Guide for Young officers, so this London edition is prime. This is the 2nd edition "with considerable alterations".
